Brickbat: We'll Leave the Light on For You

Light bulb

Minnechaug Regional Secondary High School, Massachusetts, has been lit 24 hours a days, seven days per week, since August 2021. A “green lighting system” is installed in the school’s building. It adjusts the lights to reduce energy consumption and save money when it isn’t being used. However, the system was unable to function properly for more than one year and it went into default mode. This keeps the lights on all the time, costing thousands of dollars every month. Since the school purchased the system a decade ago, the company that bought it has changed hands many times and they haven’t been able to find anyone who can fix it. Officials said that they have all the parts and should be able repair it by February break.
