Centering Women’s Voices in Maternal and Infant Health


Tammy Snyder Murphy, New Jersey’s First Lady, is leading an Initiative on Maternal and Infant Health (MIH), which expands her Nurture NJ work across the country.

Phil Murphy, New Jersey Governor, was appointed Chair of the National Governors Association (NGA). The role allows Governor Murphy to leverage NGA’s convening power and expertise on a specific policy topic over the next year. Given the alarming rise in mental health hospitalizations and suicides among America’s youth, Governor Murphy chose to address youth mental health as his NGA Chair’s Initiative. In addition, New Jersey’s First Lady Tammy Snyder Murphy is also spearheading her own NGA Initiative on maternal health and infants (MIH), expanding the Nurture NJ work across the country. These are the four pillars of her policy focus:

  • Centering women’s voices,
  • Improved and better use of maternal and infant health data
  • Access to and quality of care should be expanded
  • Innovative MIH programs, policies and technologies:
