DeSantis is costing Florida a fortune; the Senate continues to Senate

Thanks for paying for my presidential aspirations, Florida taxpayers. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Monday’s House select committee hearings on the Jan. 6. coup attempt raised new questions about just how much of Trump’s post-election fundraising was just a money-seeking grift, but his most likely Republican presidential competitor in 2024 won’t play second fiddle to anyone when it comes to making off with other people’s money: It turns out that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ various “culture war” laws are costing Florida taxpayers a fortune. Your tax dollars at work?

The United States Senate, meanwhile, continues its role as the world’s least deliberative body. The Senate jumped to provide extra security to—no, not school children—the families of Supreme Court justices, as tempers flared after the leak of a draft opinion that would end federal access to abortion rights. Now Senate Republicans are vowing to block that same proposal after the House extended the same security protections to Supreme Court law clerks and other workers. As to why Republicans consider that a dealbreaker, that’s an … interesting question.
