A California community that’s home to numerous celebrities — including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Oprah Winfrey, and Ellen DeGeneres — was placed under an evacuation order Monday as a powerful storm battered the region.
Montecito was ordered to be evacuated by Santa Barbara County fire officials. This is because Montecito, a wealthy seaside community, faces flooding and mudslides as a result of the latest series of storms that have hit the Golden State.
A 5-year-old boy from San Luis Obispo County was swept away in the floodwaters. The boy was in a car with his mother when the floodwaters swept away their vehicle. His mother was saved by nearby people.
Monday afternoon was the start of the search to find the missing boy.
Five years ago, 23 people were killed in a mudslide that destroyed over 100 homes in Montecito. The Montecito fire district said the order was in place “due to threats of life safety caused by the ongoing storm.”
DeGeneres in a video tweeted out MondayShe claimed that sheltering-in-place was not necessary because she is higher up. She displayed floodwaters rushing down a creek she claims never flows.
