Korean boy band BTS was invited to the White House press briefing room on Tuesday to give journalists their view on the Biden administration’s initiatives to combat what has been termed AAPI hate, or hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. This is just the latest from a White House that has enlisted TikTok influencers to spread information about their view on Ukraine, Covid, and other matters.

BTS was at the podium for only a few minutes, speaking in Korean, via translator, to thank President Joe Biden for inviting them to the White House to talk about anti-Asian hate crimes. The international pop sensation did not take questions.

“So they’ll each speak first,” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “and then the interpreter will come back up and interpret what they just said. They’re not going to take any questions. They’re just going to come here and give some words and then we’ll start the briefing.”

“Thank you, Karine, for your kind words, and high from BTS. And it is a great honor to be invited to the White House today to discuss important issues of anti-Asian hate cons, Asian inclusion and diversity,” a member of the group said.

“Lastly,” he said after the other members of the group had spoken in Korean, “We thank President Biden and the White House for giving this important opportunity to speak about the important causes, and remind ourselves of what we can do as artists.”
